We’re back with another handy resource detailing the proper lubrication procedures for 5 areas of a CM Lodestar. Maintaining hoists will greatly improve the operation and longevity of your equipment\u2014make sure you’re taking the steps necessary to get the most out of your hoists. GEARBOX<\/h1>\n

The Gearbox is packed at assembly with grease and should not need to be renewed, UNLESS the gears have been removed and degreased.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

DIRECTIONS<\/strong><\/h2>\n

  1. Remove gears from housing<\/li>\n
  2. Wipe excess grease off with a soft cloth, and degrease gears and housings<\/li>\n
  3. Add grease to gear teeth and housing using the following chart:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

    LIMIT SWITCH SHAFT<\/h1>\n

    The limit switch shaft must be lubricated properly, but the limit switch gears are made of molded nylon and DO NOT require lubrication<\/p>\n

    1. Apply a light coating of machine oil to the limit switch shaft threads AT LEAST ONCE A YEAR<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n\n

      “3-in-1” or Light Machine Oil<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n

      *CM does not directly stock specific packaged quantities of this oil. When ordering, specify the type of lubricant required and the package quantity you require. Oil can also be obtained locally.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      LOAD CHAIN<\/h1>\n

      The lifespan of load chain is greatly increased with proper lubrication. A squeaking sound originating at the liftwheel or sheave wheel areas is an indication of dry chain.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      1. Keep load chain clean<\/li>\n
      2. Lubricate at regular intervals with Lubriplate Bar and Chain Oil 10-R<\/li>\n
      3. There are several methods to lubricating chain. CM recommends soaking chain, and then hanging chain overnight once saturated. We use a small oil can to run a line of oil as the chain is moving during the process of setting limits to avoid over-saturation<\/li>\n
      4. Use a clean, dry rag to remove excessive oil that remains. This should leave a film protecting the outer surfaces against the elements, but maintaining a sufficient amount to protect the inter-link area<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n\n\n

        *Normal conditions require weekly lubrication and cleaning. In extreme conditions, clean chain once a day and lubricate several times between cleanings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

        LOWER HOOK THRUST BEARING<\/h1>\n

        All bearings and bushings are pre-lubricated and require no lubrication EXCEPT the lower hook thrust bearing.<\/p>\n

        1. Lubricate lower hook thrust bearing<\/li>\n
        2. Ensure bearing is free to rotate and that the oil has successfully penetrated the bearing<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n\n

          CHAIN GUIDES, LIFTWHEEL, LOWER SHEAVE WHEEL<\/h1>\n

          When the CM Lodestar is disassembled for inspection\/repair, the chain guides, lower sheave wheel (double-chained units), and liftwheel MUST be lubricated.<\/p>\n

          1. Disassemble hoist for inspection\/repair<\/li>\n
          2. Apply Lubriplate Bar and Chain Oil 10-R in sufficient quantity to obtain natural runoff and full coverage of chain guide, liftwheel, and lower sheave wheel<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n
