Pop star activist Bob Geldof of the Boomtown Rats conceived Live Aid after viewing a documentary about the poverty and starvation in the African country of Ethiopia. Staged in four countries - the UK, the US, Australia and the USSR, its purpose was to raise both funds and awareness. Live Aid Philadelphia, held at RFK stadium, saw over 90,000 attendants and featured Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Mick Jaggar, Tina Turner, members of the Who and Led Zepplin on a scaffold stage built by Mountain Productions. Live Aid's efforts so far have raised over 75 million dollars for poverty relief.
