The Goodwill Games were created by media titan Ted Turner in 1986 in response to the political turmoil that surrounded the 1980 and 1984 Olympic games. This turmoil, created by the Russian invasion of Afganistan by the USSR, culminated in the US boycotting the 1980 Olympics, with the USSR and other block nations boycotting the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, CA. The first Goodwill Games occured in Moscow in 1986. In 1998 the Goodwill Games were hosted by New York City and Mountain Productions had the priviledge of providing seating to accommodate fans from the 76 participating countries. 2001 would see the end of the Goodwill Games.
